Tribal elders of Darra Adamkhel concerned over land for Govt. buildings

KOHAT: Tribal elders of Darra Adamkhel tehsil of Kohat district in a joint jirga with the district administration on Thursday refused to give land for the construction of buildings for government departments till the decision of the case pending in the Supreme Court against the merger.

The meeting on ‘land settlement’ chaired by additional deputy commissioner Bashir Ahmed was attended by elders from all the six tribes of the area, including Malik Naseer Afridi, Malik Sanaullah Afridi, Malik Suleman Afridi, Malik Asadullah Afridi, and others.

The talks for land occupation in the erstwhile provincially-administered tribal areas continued after 2018 when the government through the 31st Amendment in the Constitution announced its merger with KP.

Bashir Ahmed told this correspondent on the phone that they wanted to prepare a revenue record for the demarcation of boundaries of six tribes with Kohat and Peshawar, including the mountains, for which the jirga had expressed willingness to cooperate with the administration.

However, there were related complex royalty issues regarding the land.

He said the elders were reluctant to accept land acquisition terming it an encroachment on their tribal norms and jirga system.

Mr. Bashir said they urgently needed land for Rescue 1122, a police station, a park for tehsil municipal administration, a solar grid station, and a sports complex.

Answering a question, he said the departments like irrigation and communication and works would prepare their plans for required land.
